We have been living sustainability since 1884. She is omnipresent. Yesterday Today Tomorrow. Present in all our decisions, relationships and products.
Our goal is to be a sustainable brand. We work on this every day. With a lot of passion.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

At HANRO, we are dedicated to creating beautiful, high-quality garments while minimizing our environmental impact and promoting ethical practices. Sustainability is at the core of everything we do, guiding our decisions from material sourcing to production processes.

An Overview

Sustainable Sourcing

We prioritize the use of sustainable materials in our clothing. From organic cotton to TENCEL™ and recycled fibers, we carefully select materials that reduce environmental impact and support ethical practices in the industry.

Eco-Friendly Production

We employ eco-friendly manufacturing processes to minimize our carbon footprint. By reducing water and energy consumption and working with partners who share our commitment to sustainability, we ensure that our production practices are as environmentally friendly as possible.

Quality and Longevity

At HANRO, we believe in creating garments that stand the test of time. By prioritizing quality and durability, we reduce the need for frequent replacements, minimizing waste and contributing to a more sustainable fashion industry.

Made In Europe

With a few exceptions, our products are “Made in Europe”. From fabric production to the final product. Our entire supply and value chains are transparently traceable and meet the standards of sustainable, resource-saving production. This is the only way we can guarantee long-lasting, high-quality, sustainable products. Short transport routes within Europe also significantly reduce our CO2 emissions.

We believe in transparency throughout our supply chain. We provide detailed information about our production processes and materials, empowering our customers to make informed choices that align with their values.

Our commitment to sustainability is backed by certifications such as OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, ensuring that our products are free from harmful substances and manufactured in accordance with strict environmental and social standards.

Our Standard

For the love of nature

High-quality natural materials are our standard. Certificates, strict quality controls, innovative finishing processes and production in Europe are the secret of our long-lasting, hard-wearing, sustainable products.

Around 80% of the fabrics we use are made from natural fibres and fibers of natural origin. The rest are chemical fibers made from natural polymers, mixed fibers or synthetic fibres.

80% of the fabrics are produced in our in-house textile production ARULA in Vorarlberg, Austria. Our goal is to continuously increase the proportion of resource-saving, controlled, sustainable natural materials.

Sustainable Materials

We currently use organic cotton, Supreme Green Cotton® and CO 2 neutral TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres in 6 product lines.

Supreme Green Cotton®

Supreme Green Cotton® is grown in Greece on family-run cotton farms. The certified cotton is GMO-free and uses 40% less water thanks to modern drip irrigation. The entire process - from the cultivation of the raw materials to the spinning of the yarn to the end product - is Made in Europe, meets the strictest sustainability criteria and is 100% transparently traceable

Organic Cotton

Organically grown cotton is non-GMO. No fertilizers or pesticides are used during cultivation. From the cultivation to the sale of the organic cotton, the highest standards apply.

Recycled cotton

Recycled cotton fibres are obtained by upcycling used clothing or industrial scrap. The resulting sustainable yarn reduces the effort involved in spinning and dyeing and thus guarantees savings in water and energy. It is made in an ethical, ecologically responsible production system.

TENCEL™ fibres

TENCEL™ fibres are skin-friendly and almost as soft as silk. One of the outstanding properties is its high moisture absorption, which promotes a natural temperature balance. The skin feels comfortable and dry as a result. TENCEL™ fibres are biodegradable, compostable and can therefore be completely returned to nature. Our TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres come from Lenzing AG in Austria. They are made from sustainably grown wood from near-natural forests and sustainably managed plantations.

By reducing CO2 emissions and using renewable energy during production, Lenzing AG goes beyond CO2 offsetting to reduce its CO2 footprint and offers certified CO2 -free TENCEL™ fibres.

Sewing in Portugal

HANRO products have been assembled in our Portuguese factory since 1992. HTG Confecceos Lda. is part of the Huber Group and one of the largest employers of “women’s jobs” in the textiles/clothing sector in the greater Santa Maria de Feira area (approx. 140,000 inhabitants). Thanks to the Huber Group's commitment, the number of employees has more than doubled from 120 to currently 260 employees. In 2005 the factory was expanded by 1,200 square meters and the cutting was relocated from Austria to Portugal. A further 740 square meters of space was rented for packaging in 2016.

New employees are continuously trained in HANRO's high quality standards by the team on site in Portugal and annual internal audits and training take place for all employees. Specially trained personnel carry out constant inline and outline inspections - i.e. quality checks directly during and at the end of the sewing line on the finished product, even before packaging. In addition, final AQL controls (Acceptable Quality Limit) with the specification 1.0 - the highest and strictest category - take place at the very end, after packaging.

In August 2021, HTG Confecceos Lda. received the STeP BY OEKO-TEX certificate, which places very high demands on, among other things, working and social conditions. The employee fluctuation rate is only 2%. The above-average working conditions and long-term service make a significant contribution to ensuring that HANRO's very high quality level can be maintained in the long term. Of the current 260 employees, around 40 people have been working in our factory for over 30 years, around 30 people for over 20 years, and 90 people for over 10 years.
